I miss the days when you could go ‘aww…’ over kids and they would preen back in delight. Nowadays you need all your wits to manoeuvre your way around Gen-Y.
This is what happened. There was a function at my house and my neighbour’s son also had dropped in. Mind you, the kid is not a day over 8 years old (or possibly far younger).
Cute little tyke. He danced like a live wire to the music and charmed the pants off everyone. Finally when he was about to leave, my grandmother introduced me to him. “That’s our neighbour’s son.” I peered down at him and smiled, “Hi!”
Without blinking he eyed me from head to toe, then looked straight up at me and shot out: “Ithu aarude pennaa? (Whose girlfriend is she?)”
HUH?! Whatever happened to “hi how are you”?
My jaw dropped in shock, and I blinked at him, not knowing how to react. I was vaguely aware of people around me laughing. “I..er..” I stuttered.
And then out of the blue, he turned shy. “I am leaving,” he said, turned around, and blew me a flying kiss. I decided to humour him. I laughed along with everyone, blew a flying kiss right back at him and said, “Sheri njan ninte pennaa! (Fine I’ll be YOUR girlfriend.)”
Apparently it just wasn’t my day. He stopped short, looked at me suspiciously and mouthed one word: “Goodbye!” Yeesh!! Guys, I tell you! There’s no pleasing them!
“Broke up with me already? That was fast!” I stared at him bewildered. He grinned, winked at me and left, a whistle playing at his lips.
There goes the shortest relationship I’ve ever had in my life! All of 10 seconds! I ought to be setting a record for the Guiness Book!
Kids today! Hmph! Go figure! :-/
I guess life’s irony lies in the fact that his name is Aashiq! No kidding!
Cheers!!! :-D

I don't know what has got into kids now a days. I guess, its the exposure. :)
I have a 6 years old cousin and she completely freaks me out with her dadi amma talks.
LOL LOL...poor you!! Trust me kids today are more demanding and they are mean.Probably a case of sour grapes after my innumerable attempts to woo my 5year old samne wali ladki :D..she takes bike rides from me but wont return back a single flying kiss.
@amit
true...media exposure has a lot to do with it. plus lifestyles are changing. kids no longer have that innocent aura around them.
